Analysis of Themes in Thriller

Analysis of Themes in Thriller

Thriller film name: Joker (2019)

Key Themes:
 -Death
 -Revenge
 -Perception of Reality

How Key Themes are Denotated within the trailer:

Revenge- In the movie, Revenge can be seen when Arthur (Joker) cannot control his laughing disorder on the train. This causes a few guys to take advantage of Arthur (Joker) and beat him up, however Arthur (Joker) continues to laugh this allows the guys on the train to continue taking advantages of Arthur (Joker) as they assume that he can't help himself. Once the train stops at the last platform Arthur (joker) picks up a gun and shoots one guy in the leg he then shoots the other two, this is Arthur's way of revenge and getting back at the guys who thought they could take advantage of him.

Death- In this movie, death can be seen when Arthur (joker) kills the Tv Presenter Murray. Arthur (Joker) attends Tv Presenter Murrays Live conference where it all takes a bad turn for Murray where Murray offends Arthur and makes jokes out of Arthur. This is when Arthur takes it personal, Arthur then lashes out and shoots Murray in the head In front of a huge audience and then sits there with his legs crossed this is a key theme of death.

Perception of Reality- In this movie, Arthur (Joker) has a personality disorder. Arthur see's the world differently to everyone, he relies on his mother but when his mother passes away. Arthur gets into shock and his whole world flips this can be seen as Perception of reality. Arthur is still trying to find himself in his own world.

Themes seen within the Trailer:
Revenge- In the trailer revenge can be seen when the guys beat Arthur up and he is on the floor however towards the ending of the trailer Arthur is running away with the bag as the police sirens head towards the scene. (1:52) In this Scene we can see that Arthur has raided the whole city and people are following in his footsteps ready to destroy Arkham with him as he laughs away.

Perception of reality- This theme can be see in the trailer when Arthur talks about how his whole life he didn't know who he really was or if he really existed, we can also tell that Arthur has some kind of mental health condition as he goes to see someone weekly about therapy and to see if he is okay. (1:32) In this scene Arthur quotes " I  didn't know if I really existed."

Death- (2:03) Moments before Murrays gets shot dead on the Live Conference Arthur asks him to do a favour and bring him out on show as the 'Joker'.

The Effect of the Theme on the Audience?

Revenge - Revenge plays a big effect on the audience this is because the word 'revenge' is usually used in a bad way when it comes to human society. In 'Joker' the revenge is shown in a violent way this could encourage the audience to use revenge the way Arthur (Joker) did or even a worser way.

Perception of Reality- This theme does not affect all audience however this could play a big emotional role for some people, many people now days in society suffer with many different mental health conditions and a perception of reality comes under the mental health condition. Perception of reality is when you don't see reality the same way as other humans do which usually comes under mental health/health conditions. Some member of the audience themselves could suffer with a condition which could be very upsetting to them other may feel sorry for Arthur (Joker) as he was attached to his mother, others may feel the pain of Arthur and his mothers passing, Overall the audience could have many different reactions.

Death - Death is a very sad theme to a lot of people who have lost a loved one, death could triger many different reactions such as crying, anger and sadness. The audience watching Joker may possibly be shocked when seeing what Arthur (Joker) does to the Tv presenter Murray , and have no words, this is because Murray being shot on a live conference was unexpected to the audience watching Joker.

Exploring the 3 Themes in My Own Film:
In my film that i will be creating i would explore the theme 'Revenge' i have chosen to explore this theme i my future film because you can create a lot of possible scenes with the theme of revenge in good and bad ways however i would explore my theme of revenge in  bad way which would lead to consequences and a plot which expands further into the film/ scene i would be creating.
